Disabling Pop-up Blockers

This page contains instructions for disabling several common pop-up blockers. Pop-up blockers can cause several issues for students and faculty. They can prevent tests from starting; they can prevent users from progressing from one section of a test to the next; they can prevent reports from being displayed and can cause several other issues.

Some important things to note are...

  • You may have more than one pop-up blocker on your computer. Disabling a pop-up blocker does not mean you have disabled all of them.

  • Many free software tools available on the internet, especially toolbars for Internet Explorer and other browsers, include pop-up blockers. Note that a toolbar may be installed on your computer even if it is not displayed in your browser. Click here for instructions on how to determine what toolbars are installed on your computer.

  • Many pop-up blockers can be bypassed, even if they are enabled, by pressing a key or key combination while clicking on a link. Most often, this key is the <Ctrl> key.

Most Common Pop-up Blockers

To assist in turning off the pop-up blocker on your system, select from the following list that are major products that can cause pop-up issues:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 7
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6
Google Toolbar
Yahoo! Toolbar
AOL Toolbar
MSN Toolbar
Pop-up Stopper
PopUpCop
NetZero
Norton Internet Security
Earthlink Toolbar
AIM Toolbar
ViewPoint Toolbar

For most pop-up blockers, it is possible to disable them only for certain web sites while allowing them to continue blocking pop-ups on other web sites. Because there are so many different types of pop-up blockers, the instructions below in most cases only describe how to disable them completely. If you want to disable them only for ERI's web sites, but leave them enabled for other web sites, you will need to find the appropriate instructions for each one. If you want to take these extra steps, you will need to disable them for the URLs listed below.

Often, a computer will have more than one pop-up blocker installed on it. They are often installed with free software available on the web. This is especially the case with Internet Explorer toolbars. You may have a toobar installed, even if it is not displayed. Before following the instructions below for disabling pop-up blockers, you should determine what toolbars are installed on your computer. How to determine this depends on what version of Internet Explorer (IE) is installed on your computer. Click here for instructions on how to determine which toolbars are installed on your computer.
